LAW OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC DEFENDERCollege And Law School Internship

Internship Opportunities

The Broward Public Defender’s Office offers two types of internships for law students and undergraduate students: Certified Legal Interns (CLIs) and non-certified. Both programs afford invaluable experience working alongside Assistant Public Defenders.

NOTE:  We offer internships only to students. We do not accept law school graduates or attorneys as volunteers.

CANDIDATE:NON-CERTIFIED INTERNS (Volunteer Interns)

Volunteer interns may be either current Undergraduate or Law School students who will provide litigation support to our attorneys. Volunteer Interns are typically assigned to Felony, Misdemeanor, Juvenile, Drug Court, Mental Health Court, Veteran’s Court, or Major Crimes Divisions of the Public Defender’s Office. They gain experience by conducting client interviews (sometimes in a jail environment), research and writing, assisting in the investigation of cases, attending depositions, contacting potential defense witnesses and observing courtroom procedures.

The Law Office of the Public Defender, 17th Judicial Circuit requires a minimum of 20 hours per week for a semester, which is difficult to do when taking a full course load.

If you are able to satisfy these commitments and remain interested in volunteering during the Summer, please contact us at internship@browarddefender.org and in the subject line please put (1) your name, (2) “Volunteer Intern” and, (3) “Summer”   Send your resume, and your ideal start date (either May or June). Please include any other scheduling information or specific details about your circumstances that we might need to determine your acceptance and best placement.

We will begin accepting resumes for the Summer Volunteer Intern Program starting in January of each year.  Acceptances into the Summer Volunteer Intern program will usually be sent out no later than March 31st.
