CANDIDATE:Assistant Public Defender

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The primary responsibility of Assistant Public Defenders is to provide highly efficient and effective professional representation to our clients.

Applicants must have a strong interest in courtroom litigation, with excellent communication and critical thinking skills.

Attorney responsibilities include but are not limited to preparation of cases for defense of indigent persons charged with criminal offenses; interviewing clients and making initial determinations regarding bail and mental competency; preparation of legal documents; conducting legal research; taking depositions; determining the need for expert witnesses; advising and counseling clients regarding plea offers, client’s rights, options and strategies; establishing and maintaining professional relationships with clients and their families, witnesses and court personnel; and appearing in court for arraignments, pre-trial hearings, trials, dispositions and other court proceedings.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited law school and member of the Florida Bar in good standing

FEDERAL PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS

Employees of the Law Office of the Public Defender are eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. PSLF forgives the remaining balance on Direct Student Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for The Law Office of the Public Defender.
